China: More Signs of Modest Improvement

  • Data on investment, retail sales, and industrial output support the notion that the economic stimulus measures adopted earlier in the year have begun to bear fruit.  In fact, the data make clear that public-sector investment has accelerated significantly in the past four months, helping stabilize overall fixed capital formation.  But it should be noted that private fixed capital formation has itself stabilized and it is now growing at a 20%-plus pace.
