Claims: Benign bounce off lows
Initial jobless claims data surprise visibly to the upside for the first time since early September, rising 12,000, to 290,000 (Consensus and DE: +2,000, to 280,000). Continuing claims rise 36,000, to 2.392 million, after falling 31,000 the week prior. The latter result dampens the sharply-improving trend posted over recent months, but one week will not shake cumulative improvement and historically-low levels across both series. The Labor Department cited no special factors impacting the results.
