Initial Claims: Strong Underlying Trends

Initial claims surprise to the upside, jumping 24,000 (Consensus and Decision Economics: +4,000), from a prior-week level revised up by 1,000). No special factors were cited by the Labor Department, though this was the week including Good Friday–raising the possibility that seasonal adjustment over-corrected for that factor.
