January retail sales are moderately weaker than expected, but the report as a whole is made sharply softer than expected by big downward revisions to December and November–changing the character of the Christmas season, and probably exerting visible downward pressure on Q4 GDP consumption.  The Q1 consumption trend is sharply stunted as a cumulative result.
