China’s Monetary Policy (update)
[private]China: The PBOC’s Unsurprising Move
- China’s central bank cut commercial banks’ reserve requirements by an additional 50 basis points. The move is entirely unsurprising and quite uninformative in a period (January-to-February) when data is particularly difficult to interpret, delayed and distorted by the lunar year calendar.
- In that context, the bank’s decision looks rather inertial, just one more step in the direction of a looser monetary policy—policymakers’ response to a clear shift of risks away from inflation and in the direction of slower growth.
