China: Soft-landing–for now

  • China’s GDP and all other data released last night, and recently, point toward continued growth at a pace consistent with gradually easing inflationary pressures; a soft-landing—for now.
  • The risk of a hard-landing has not gone away; it has actually increased during the past few months, if one considers both the still-uncertain consequences of earlier policy steps and the deterioration of China’s export markets.
  • Nonetheless, it is hard not to view the data just released as constructive from a financial investor’s perspective: the economy seems to be functioning satisfactorily (against official targets) and there would appear to be no need for further policy tightening.
